So I took this deck to a 17 player casual tournament today and went 3-2... The two defeats seemed harsh but the record is as it is... The deck plays well and the obvious burn strategy still has many lines as I remember well. This deck is awesome, it's not as clear cut and obvious as jam the burn spell every turn, one must know the exact sequence of spells and exactly when to hold and when to play burn... For example you don't just hit Skullcrack to give Monastery Swiftspear +1/+1 with prowess. The deck is more than capable of 20+ damage by turn 5 and usually doesn't need the +1/+1 what it needs is timing at it's absolute best.
I'm not 100% sold on Monastery Swiftspear over something like Vexing Devil, but the interraction of the Swiftspear and Volcanic Fallout is literally godlike, Vexing Devil is almost always a 4 damage spell, the only time it isn't is if your opponent can favourably deal with it. Thus the decision is a hard one for me.
Searing Blaze doesn't seem as strong as I'd like, in a deck of only 19 lands the landfall isn't really kicking off often past turn 3 for me and it's snagged me in a game vs Merfolk, I may go up to 4 Lavaspike and an oddball card over these. When I say Oddball I'm thinking like Flames of the Bloodied Hand.
Sideboarding wise I'm loving Ensnaring Bridge which should have won me a match vs Merfolk if he hadn't have used Spreading Sea on my only white source then seeing me draw a Lightning Helix followed by Boros Charm... That was rough!
I'm not sold on Deflecting Palm but I fancy another tournament with the card in, maybe 2 in the maindeck over Searing Blaze to see it's power.
Destructive Revelry is utterly amazing and the games I've needed it have been awesome. Hitting Ghostly Prison, hitting Vedalken Shackles and hitting Spreading Seas! This badboy also have potential against the real Tier 1 babies like Splinter Twin and well it would have been cool vs Pod... lol.
So anyways this is going to be my next modern project... Being the burninator again. This deck isn't easy to master, but easy to get started with. It's fun, it's quick and it's damn competitive!
